gun stock refinish tips

I would like to refinish the stock on a remington 600 anyone got any tips on what to use to make it look almost factory. The gun has been well used . thanks

    Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil is a good product. DON'T sand the stock, use stripper to get the old finish off, use a damp cloth, like a tea towle and an iron to steam out the dents in the stock. You may use sandpaper to LIGHTLY smoth the dents after they are steamed. Put very thin light coates of finish on the checkering, use a tooth brush to make sure it's even, and has no buildup. After 2-3 coates, use painters tape to cover the checkering while you continue to work on the rest of the stock. The best advice I can give you, is to be PATIANT!!! Take your time, you will have a better end result.

    After stripping any crud off..(paint /laquer etc)i always hang them in a sauna for a an hour or 3 to sweat any bruising out,then wire wool, & teak oil & buff...lovellllllllly..

    strip it and use a iron as capt said to steam out the dents if the fibers aren't broke. i like tung oil and minerial spirts. steel wool btween each coat and as said be patience.Firearms - A Classic Oil Finish by MarkFreburg

    do i need to stain the stock or does the true oil stain also i would like to have a nice matt finish not to shiny also do i rub this oil in and withe what.I have never used it before . i always just used stain then poly.

    Tru oil has no stain in it, if you are going to stain it first, use a water based stain and let it dry thoroughly.
