pre 1964 winchester model 70 30.06
Looking for some help here. Considering buying a pre 1964 model 70 30.06 from local gun shop for my 19 year old son. Very good condition with old 4X Redfield scope. Blueing and overall condition is nice and the stock has great checkering with the stock has quite a bit detailed inlaid design in different woods in many areas. Were these available from factory in such detail or was this added by a prior owner? Very attractive piece but I was concerned that an altered rifle may not be worth much as a collectible piece that will still be used to hopefully bring home a few more kills. Any help here?

I never saw a factory inlaid Winchester stock, but there were shops doing such work and DIY kits sold in the day.

In most cases an "altered" rifle will take value away. Depending on what you paid, will determine its real net value. I am not aware of such rifles being made by Winchester...but I cannot say for sure. There appears to be more demand for pre-64's in general...altered or not. Most collectors however would probably shy-away from an altered pre-64 Model 70. On the other hand...there will always be a market for good solid pre-64's that would be considered "good shooters". Thought being...yes, it may be altered...but it's still a pre-64 Model 70! NOT BAD!!! 0 -

I agree, it's still a pre 64 model 70. I have a few, and most of them are shooters, it's real hard, and expensive to find "collector" grade model 70s. Most people bought them to hunt with, and thats what got done with them. I just try to find guns that where taken care of, and hopefully not altered. As long as they have been maintained well, and not abused, you still have as good a rifle as you can buy. If they are cared for properly, a better long term firearm investment is hard to find.
