Colt Python
How can you tell a nickle finish from an ultimate stainless finish? The bluebook lists both and I don't know which one I have. Also how can you tell the year it was made by the serial no.? Does the serial no. give any other info about the gun?

I have a Colt Python polished SS with a 8" barrel. The gun is NIB. all paper work, carrying case, the cylinder has never been rotated. I bought the gun in 1993. gun serial number is PY3985 My question is, what's it worth? Thanks, I appreciate any help...[:D] 0 -
Sorry I can't help, but just wondered why you would take a chance messing up one of the finest revolvers ever made. I own several model 27's that I really love, but I believe I would choose a Python over a 27. 0 -
Take the Python to a gunsmith. The frame can be warped by improper tools or too much leverage. 0 -

The barrel is not pinned and unscrews in the conventional manner - counter clockwise. You should use an action block so you don't spring the frame, I don't think simply leaving in the cylinder will avoid that because the pressure you are going to put on the frame when unscrewing the barrel is in the "other" direction relative to any support the cylinder & yoke might offer.
Removing the barrel is simple, but done incorrectly can damage the gun. Is a barrel going on this thing after the current one is removed?0 -
My Python currently has a 4" barrel and I thought that it would be nice to switch back and forth between 4" , 6" and maybe even 8" if I could find one. Thank You all for all of your input. 0 -

Probably not a good idea. You have to index properly, set the barrel to cylinder gap - not a readily done affair. The Dan Wesson is a better idea, or sell your current Python for the length you prefer.0 -

If I'm reading this correctly [item in blue] you are attempting to have a firearm that you can change barrels at whim. The frame (and barrel) threads were never meant to take such mileage. Leave it be, and get a D/W (noted in prior post) if you want redi-change capability to the barrels. Essentially the threads on the barrel, and the frame were meant to be a one-time application, where the thread course is 'set' after the barrel has been installed at the factory. Leave the Python be. If you really need the barrel-swap option, you need another gun. Best, Joe0 -

I know that I tend to sound rude, but if you really have to ask those kinds of questions then you are not qualified to change the barrel on a Python. This is not the pistol that you want to practice gunsmithing on so if you need a barrel changed you are going to have to find a smith who'll do it, and a lot of them won't perform barrel changes on Pythons.0
