mauser 98
I have seen quite a few rifles on gunbroker for sale that are Mauser 98 actions and are reasonably priced. Are they reasonably good actions or what's the scoop on them?

Since Numrich is not selling recievers any more, does anyone know a good place to get stripped Mauser 98 recievers? I don't want YUGO's.

Hello, welcome to the forum. Well in general any given Mauser 98 in good condition that was originally issued in 8x57 can be made into a 35whelen with just a barrel change, as the original bolt face and feeding rails are compatable. But, you say you have a 9x57 chambered rifle, so I assume you have some kind of original commercial sporting rifle and not a reworked military. Pictures of just what you have would really help us give you better advice. Still, if it is an original commercial rifle I and others will probably try to convince you to leave it alone as is. You can pick up a good M98 action for as little as $100 on the auction side to build a 35whelen thus leaving a piece of history intact for the future....... 0 -
Why bother. The 9 x 57 is a very good cartridge. Easy to make brass from 30-06 and bullets are available. A conversion will cost a bundle of money and you'd get little in return that you don't already have. 0 -
It is deffinately a 9x57. I got the gun with several boxes of ammo..some round nose,some speer brand bullets, and a set of dies. The gun has ingraving and i believe its called a matt rib? with the name MatthiasWagner,Trier. Ill try to post a photo! 0 -
According to Cartridges of the World, the 9x57 uses .356 bullets and the .35 Whelen uses standard .358 bullets. The other dimensions of the 9x57 should clean up with the 35 Wh. rechamber. You might slug your barrel and find if it might be a little oversize. It's likely that .002 would not cause a problem but I'm leaving that up to you and your gunsmith. 0 -

Without quality photographs it's basically an uninformed opinion about the value and as to whether or not to perform the conversion.

If your rifle is one of those neat german made rifles with the rib etc. your value will be deminished with any major changes to it. i.e. rebarrel or rebore.
I did that to one and have regretted it ever since.
BUT
I think rebarrelling is the best choice. You may be able to find a smith that can reset the rib on the new barrel etc.
Might be cheaper to buy a different 35 whelen, and keep the neat old rifle like it is. Several M 98 selling on GB at very reasonable prices.

You can get brass by necking up 8mm brass that is available new from rem and win. Seems like it would be simialr to a 358 win. which is about a 100-150 slower than the whelen.
Unless you're going to shoot the 250 wieght that may not be a big difference to you.0 -
IMHO you could sell your rifle here on Gunbroker buy a new factory ready made 35 Whelen and give yourself a NEW rifle + maybe some cash and make a Mauser Collectors day. 0 -
One of the gun parts houses was selling these earlier in the year pretty cheap due to the caliber. 0
