Skip line checkering

I always found skip line or "basket weave" checkering eye pleasing as well as functional.The early Sako Vixon models and others were good examples.Except for custom stockmakers and checkering services it is no longer found.Is it passe, too labor intensive,or both?

  I have not bought much but older rifles in some years, but from the late '80's into very early 2000, I have rifles with skip-line checkering. I too like it and find it more comfortable to hold.
