    Unless I misread it, in one of Bert's "sticky" posts he has listed serial numbers retrieved from factory records which indicate that serial number 5860 dates to 8-29-1895 and 13135 to 4-14-1896. If the 1894 date is important to you, you might want to double check.

    In my opinion, no, but then I don't need a pre 1898 Model 1894 rifle, in fairly good condition, and chambered in the very desirable 38-55. [:D]

    It isn't a first year gun as has been pointed out, the wood has at least two repaired cracks, and if I'm seeing side metal on the upper tang like I think I do, then the stocks were sanded down before the coat of varnish was applied.

    It has been on GB for over a month and the highest bid received has been $1,431.01.

    I think it's a fair price for a collectible, which this one isn't, but kinda high for a shooter.

    i would NEVER disagree with Bert about a winchester, I just thought with the repaired/re varnished stock and wrong rear sight, it would be a shooter. kinda forgot it was over 100 yrs old.

    Hello Todd,

    In my opinion, the "Buy it Now" price is right at the upper end of its retail value (in otherwords, the seller has it priced correctly). If your intent is too resell it immediately, the "Buy it Now" price is too high. I would not be uncomfortable with a bid of $1400.

    In looking at the stocks, if they were sanded, it was only very lightly. The cracks are not over bearing, and the overall condition is reasonably good for a 114-year old Winchester Model 1894. As mentioned, it is a 1895 vintage gun. It has two major +'s... the fact that it is an "Antique", and the caliber, but it also has two -'s... the condition of the bore, and the stocks.

    Tom, I disagree... that rifle is still quite collectable to many. Only the high-end collectors will pass it by. The fact that it is an authentic "Antique" Model 1894, and in the most desirable caliber keeps it in the collectable arena.

    Remember the saying "buyer beware" and look at what is not shown or said. In this case, where is the factory letter? If you are interested in any collector grade firearm for which a letter can be had, wouldn't you supply such as proof your gun was original?

    Maybe I'm too suspicious but my finer pieces are all documented to the best of my ability.

    The roll stamp on the barrel sure looks light to me for an original.
