ruger mini thirty v ak-47
I would prefer a SOCOM Scout/Squad rifle, but with my wife in school, finances are limited for a new autoloading rifle. a decent bolt action is a possibility and can be had at a fair price.

The AK is known all over the world as probably the most reliable assault weapon around. Its not the most accurate but is super reliable and delivers a pretty good punch.
I think it would be the choice of most here on GB if choosing between it and the Ruger. There are others I would consider using but your selection is limited.0 -
Pro for the 30 - doesn't look "evil"
Against the -30 - expensive magazines, may not last (I burned the barrel out of a mini-14 in 3500 rounds)
Against the AK - over priced for what it is these days. Looks "evil"
Split the difference - get a good SKS.0 -

I agree with usernameless. If finances are limited, get an SKS. Since these have fixed 10 round magazines, they are legal just about everywhere and are not considered "assault" rifles.
It will depend a little on what you want to do with it, but given your choice, I'd pick the AK, as its basically foolproof and high-cap mags are easy to find.
One other potential problem with the mini-30s is that lots of them don't like the hard primers on the cheap steel case ammo. This problem can be fixed up with tougher springs.
On AKs, cost of these has actually been plummeting over the last few months. Romanian AKs can be had for under $400 new in box now.0 -
Personally I think the mini-30 is a heck of alot more reliable platform than the AK. I say this because you won't be buying the same soviet made AK assault rifle that got the reputation at your local gunshop. I've seen some pretty mixed quality issues with different manufacturers of AK's. The Century Arms Ak's (which are all the WASR's and $500 range guns on the market at the moment) are totally hit or miss. I mean there are alot of good ones out there, but I've had issues with mine, and I've already seen one posting here in the forum about a guy who had one with a defective trunion from the factory. Basically when you buy one, your buying a used gun built on a new reciever.
But there's only one maker of the mini-30, Ruger... The gun has an established reputation, and is built with using a similar operating system to the M1 carbine and similar to the M14, and techinically the M1 Garand, all field proven. Yea the magazines will be more expensive, but you don't have to buy them all at once. Just pickup a new one here or there when you have the money.0 -
Depends on what you are wanting to use it for. I have a mini 30 that I love to hunt with. A couple of sks's that I play with. I have an AK that only gets brought out usually with the 100 rnd drum for show/intimidation/bragging rights. I dislike shooting the AK's personally. Since you can't get what you want with the wife in school I would go cheap with an SKS, that way you have a semi auto large caliber centerfire now. When finances improve buy what you want. Then the sks becomes a truck/cache/SHTF gun. 0 -

Never had any problems with either the AKs or Mini 30 I have had. The AKs look more military, Mini 30 more like a hunting rifle and a little more comfortable in the shoulder. Price about the same, accuracy about the same. My 2 cents. 0 -
I'd go with the SKS. If you want detachable mags, they made some to take AK mags. 0
