Marlin manufacture date

I love to learn the history of my firearms. I am trying to assist a neighbor that has an old Marlin 336 CS in .35 remington. I have seen the lists of "how to date" Marlin lever actions but all I can find are lists with serial numbers that have two letters followed by a series of numbers ie: AB123456. His lever only has one number I can find under the lever on the metal frame or "tang" that is set into butt stock. It has 3 letters and one number ie: JBB5 though that is not the correct number as I hesitate to list the actual number.

He is 55 years old and from family history it was his grandfathers gun.

Can someone point me in the right direction or have any knowledge of the approximate age?

the only other markings I can find are a "JM" in an oval on the right side of barrel near receiver. Nothing on the stock under the butt plate. The barrel is marked "The Marlin Firearms Co. Est 1878 NewHaven, Conn USA Cal 35 Rem"

    The Marlin 336CS was first produced in 1984. It is basicly a continuation of the prior 336C with the addition of a hammer block safety.

    It appears the gun is much more current than the researched ser# base, try calling Marlin.

    The "OOPS" does make a difference!

    The Marlin 336SC was made circa- 1948 to 1963 with the 35Rem chambering introduced about 1950.

    My 336SC in 35Rem has the ser# on the lower tang under the lever.
    The 3 letter & 1 digit number there on your gun is no doubt the ser#. With a good light & magnifying glass, examine it closly.

    You referenced JBB5 which I suspect would in fact be J885. If J is the first letter, then your manufacture year is 1952. If still in doubt, check the ser# closely & repost.

    Check out www.marlinowners.com You'll get your answer there. My Marlin .30-30 I got new in 1965 and serial # starts qith "AA" my friends brother shows up at deer camp with his Marlin .30-30 that starts with "Z". I say 1964? He says how did you know that? I just knew that "AA" was 1965 as they had ran out of single letters by then.

    Your rifle was manufactured in 1966 most of the time the full serial number is required to get the date of manufacture in this case the later Marlin rifles have date listed by letters 123456.
