range assisted reticle

I'm considering buying either a Leupold VX-3 with a B&C reticle, a Burris Euro-Diamond with Ballistic Plex, or a Bushnell 4200 with a DOA reticle. My question is this. Does the majority of people feel either one of these reticles is worth the additional money, or should I scrap the idea and just go with the Duplex or Multi-X reticle?

    I think it's going to depend on what the intended use is going to be. All of the reticles you mention work but some of us prefer one over the other visually. Also bear in mind that there will be compromises in the accuracy of these reticles as they are not matched to a specific bullet/velocity/range but they are an average of ballistic performance. This is akin to rifle manufacturers using 13-1/2" for the average length of pull for most shooters. You will still have to shoot your ammunition in on targets at those ranges in order to establish the actual performance. Your performance (consistency/repeatability) and that of your ammunition will have an impact on the accuracy of the reticle.

    Be sure to try these scopes with the particular reticles before buying simply to establish that you can see them and work with them. Some work better for individuals than others.

    Thanks nononsense for the input.The intended use for whichever scope I buy will be hunting, although I can't say for sure which species will be primary as yet. I am deployed to the great land of sand as I speak, and I have been informed by my wife not to make any plans for deer season of 2010, because she is working on a surprise for me. My guess is that she's working on some sort of a hunting trip for me, but I can't pry anymore information from her. My SWAG would be that she's planning an elk hunting trip, but can't say for sure. I don't have much of a scope on my 338, so my coming home present to myself is going to be a new scope and a new pair of binocs, so I'm trying to figure out which one. Oh by the way. I've found a mint Redfield 3-9 with a mildot reticle that I may consider as well, depending on what recommendations I get here.
