I was at a Pawn shop today and saw an older Savage 99. I am wondering what Model it is and how much it should be worth to buy. It was chambered in 300 savage with a 24" bbl. It had a saftety located by the lever and the rotary magazine down inside. Sparse chekering on the Stock, but it was cut and not impressed. NO cracks in the stock. No checkering on the Forend. It had a plastic looking cap on the pistol grip and a steel buttplate. It was listed for $359.00 I looked and looked but could find no model number. Does anybody have any idea what this model was? Where would the model number be? I should have written down the serial number . I can go back.

    Regards,

It takes a combination if characters and dating to sort out the models. I can only do it with book in hand.

How can one tell what series 99 they have, I just picked up a 99 in 300 savage with a serial number in the 516xxx range

There should be a letter stamped in a small circle on the edge of the lever where it pivots off the frame - very small letter inside a circle. I may be off a year or two, but I believe that "A' is 1948 and "B" is 1949, etc, etc.....

the serial number puts it in 1949 the next few things are important factors in determining what 99 it is. what dose the barrel stamp say and where is it located?how long is the barrel? whats the forearm look like? dose it have a schnable forearm or is it slim and tapered? what is the pattern of the checkering on the grip area look like? and last on the frame where the lever bolts on there will be a small stamp a circle with a letter and a number what are they? pictures are priceless!!!

Where the lever attaches to the frame there is an asterik ( like an X with dashes in the quadrants), not a circle with a number, and the proof mark is on the R/S of the barrel, not on the L/S where it says 300 savage

Your 99 is a 49 model 99EG its one of the more popular models out there. they were made from 1935 to 1960. acording to murrys( the ninety nine) book of savages there was none made from 1942 to 1945 nice old guns! good luck!
