500 S&W Special

Hi,

New to this forum. Got my Shooting Times magazine yesterday and it had article about the Taurus 500 S&W mag revolver. In the pics they showed a "500 Special" which was shorter than the mag but they didn't mention the special in the article. I was not aware that a 500 Special even existed. Anyone have any info on the 500 Special??

    I have a set of RCBS 500 S&W special dies. This isNOT 500 S&W Mag.
    The 500 special case is almost 1/2 inch shorter than the 500 mag.
    Out of curiosity, I Googled 500 spl and all I could find was that the cartridge was introduced to creat a less recoil cartridge to shoot thru 500 mag revolvers. I searched at length for ammo, brass, or anything of info on this cartridge and was unsuccessful. Do any of you experts out there have info on this round.

    I think that it was a one time run and that was it. I remember seeing some 500 Special ammo come thru the store many years ago, but have not seen anything lately.

    From 2004:
    Developed by Cor-Bon/Glaser (at Smith & Wesson's request), the 500 S&W Special was introduced in August. A shorter-cased version of the 500 S&W, it is no different in concept from a .38 Special fired in a .357 Magnum, or a .44 Special in a .44 Magnum. And it functions perfectly in the S&W Model 500 while producing less recoil. Two loads are currently available-a 350-grain JHP at 1,350 fps/1,417 ft.-lb., and a 350-grain full-
    metal-jacket "plinking/practice" round at 1,300 fps. The shortened 500 S&W Special fits into a standard-sized large
    handgun frame while producing ballistics comparable to the .480 Ruger. Although no one is talking right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new, more compact
    .50-caliber revolver from S&W in the very near future.

    I own a 500 mag, I was wondering if there was any brass available. I did not know the round was recently introduced. Thx for the info.

    You can duplicate 500 Special loads in your magnum cases using Tightgroup or L'il Gun powder, 350 grain bullets to a velocity of around 1300-1400 FPS.
