Model 12 20 ga.
I have the chance to buy a Winchester model 1912 in 20 gauge. Serial # is 32,000, 25" bbl, full choke, solid rib. The stock has been cut off and a J.C. Higgins recoil pad has been installed. There are some fairly bad pits in the receiver, barrel, and rib. The blueing is about 50%. Mechanically the gun is is in good shape-no play in the take-down area. The action is smooth and locks up tight. Since I don't have the gun I can't take pictures. The guy selling it is in his 70's. He said he got the gun for Christmas when he was 10 or 11. He won't put a price on it, he want's me to make him an offer. How can I come up with a fair value?

lkannes, first of all, the model 12 in which you speak probably has a 2 1/2 inch chamber as per the low serial number, unless it has been lengthened to 2 3/4. The cut stock is detrimental to value. If the gun meets your expectations and you want it as a shooter, 400 bucks would be a reasonable offer. Let me add that the Model 12, especially in 20 gauge, is the sweetest handling, fastest pointing repeating shotgun ever, and I speak from experience. Good luck on your purchase. 0 -
If I could find a replacement stock I think it would make a great pheasant gun. I don't know about the chamber length though. I will have to look at that when I get back there. I don't intend to invest too much in it as it will never be collector item. Thanks for your opinion on the value. At least I have an idea what it would be worth. 0 -
with the cut stock and "There are some fairly bad pits"........I'd say closer to $200/250. If it has been converted to 2 3/4" it should say so. 0
