It is rare to find a 99 without a chrome lined barrel. Leave it alone since that is what came on it.

Don Tony, I've forgotten the precise characteristics of a "last ditch" M99 Ariska. What I do remember about those guns is that they were poorly machined, maybe a cast receiver, and had a bolt handle that ended in a cylindrical knob instead of the more or less egg-shaped knob, and an integral upper tang. You should have a gunsmith who is familiar with the Jap rifles check it out for you to determine whether it safe to fire.

On the other hand, if it is not a "last ditch" gun, the M99 has a very strong action, more so than Springfields and Mausers.

    Cheers,

I wouldn't advise attempting a barrel change on a Last Ditch. W/O going into detail, the pain fact is that Last Ditch receivers are NOT the same strength and quality as the earlier T-99's. And are at best suspect as how safe even a pristine example is to fire.
Plus the rifle, even as a Last Ditch, if in ORIGINAL condition, likely has some collector value. Which will be lost if altered.
My advise, Keep it as is, hang it on the wall and keep it as non firing treasured momento of your fathers service to our country.
