Ithaca 37 safety direction

I just learned from handling my model 37 collection today that 1 of them has a reverse safety. It is the oldest one, a 16 gauge with SN 598277. It pushes from left to right. My question is, was this saftey direction standard in that era, or was this made as a left-handed gun. These shotguns are considered ambidextrous in any configuration due to the bottom-eject, but I can see how this safety would be more convenient for a lefty. The rest of my Ithacas are newer than this, and all have the right to left push off safety. Now I am wondering if this was universal after a certain year or if these just happen to all be righty guns.

    IIRC the safety is reversible, so they can be setup for either right or left hand owners.

    The safeties in 37's are NOT reversible. There are left-handed safeties that were made for the 37 and yours no doubt has had one of them installed.

    Plus one on the non reversible.. they never have been, or ever will be reversible....

    I had a Mod37 Ithaca Deerslayer 12ga with a left handed safety that a gunsmith installed a right handed safety on. They are reversible,look on parts lists.

    The safety on a Model 37 Ithaca is NOT reversible. Never was. You will have to get a right hand safety and remove the stock and trigger assembly to change it fron LH to RH.

    Thanks for the info. guys. As it is a shotgun I don't hunt with, I will not get the saftey changed to righty. I kinda like the idea of owning a lefty Ithaca.
