H&R DA Revolver Question

I saw an intersting 32 S&W cal 6 inch blue H&R top break Revolver with oversized black plastic grips, serial number 462617. I did not buy it as the grips were cracked, but would like to find one. Can anyone Identify this model H&R. I have also seen them in 22RF caliber and one in 22 RF is currently Auction # 147527596 -thanks, Matt Scoble

    It is, probably, the "PREMIER" model - a medium, hinged frame, 5 shot .32 S&W (the short one only). If that matches, then, with that serial number it is a 2nd Model 4th Variation and was made between circa 1916 and 1924 - probably closer to 1924. Blue finished pieces are less common than the Nickel plated versions and command a 10% premium in value. Average condition value for a 6" barrel (also a premium) will be in the $165 - $200 range. The oversized black hard rubber grips, with a target logo at the top, two screw attachment and wrap around the backstrap and bottom of the grip - were a factory option and add another couple bucks to the mix. Those grips are difficult to come by at this time.

    I have repaired same H&R grips with clear epoxy glue. Simple to do if only a crack is the problem. Where pieces are missing, I added lampblack to the glue. Epoxy is pretty tolerant of additives to give it color so long as it is not water based. Most artist colors, dyes, paint work OK. Where the piece is missing you may have to be creative to keep epoxy from running away till it sets up. Be sure to wax the gun if you are using it as part of the form. Epoxy won't stick to waxed surface as much as bare or oily. The slow-set epoxy has been better for me. It sets up harder. I have used same method on Colt and S&W black hard rubber grips. Best get some experience -- try a batch of your glue on scrap before using it on your gun.

    Thanks for the information. One that sold on another site was labeled Premier, but evidently this is not always the case. The two I have seen sold for $165 and $190 respectively, so I guess it is not the cost but the raity that will be the difficulty. Thanks, Matt Scoble

    The Premier models were in production from circa 1895 up to circa 1942. There were several different markings schemes used during that nearly 50 year span on two models and up to 7 variations.
    Some had "PREMIER" stamped on the left side of the barrel during the mid 1930s, but most of the others were not marked with model. Thanks for thanking.
