Bert H. / 1893 Winchester ?
Just wondering if any records of how many were returned to Winchester? Ive only ran across 1 years ago. And now on a local auction I see 1 listed. Any ideal on value say 50% (nothing special)?
Thanks

I am not aware of any records that list the number of them that were returned to Winchester and replaced with a new Model 1897. What I do know, is that approximately 34,000 of them were made, and for a short period of time, they were produced at the same time as the Model 1897. Starting in the high 33,000 serial range there is a mix of both models (predominantly 1893s), and by the low 35,000 serial range, there is still a mix of both (predominantly 1897s). By the time serial number 36,000 was reached, the Model 1897 the only offering.
I have been surveying the Model 1893 and 1897 for quite some time now, and I have found nearly (100) Model 1893 guns that still exist today. I suspect that the total surviving population is somewhere in the few thousand range (1500 - 3000).
The value is directly a function of the condition and configuration. I have seen them sell for as little as $400 to as much as $10K. That said, a 50% condition standard field grade gun is typically in the $700 - $1000 range.0
