No, it wont fit. Even if it did, the AR-10 magazine would not fit in the smaller mag well of the AR-15 lower.

A 7.62X39 upper will work on any MILSPEC AR-15 lower.

Keep in mind that the 7.62X39 uppers need their own special bolt and also use a rear sight specifically calibrated for the cartridge.

Actually, I was not asking "IF" I should buy a gun. I will buy a gun!
What I am trying to figure out is which cartridge configuration will work best for an AR-15 style rifle if I want to go bigger than .224 caliber. I have one in .45ACP, and while it is fun to shoot, it is limited to less than 100 yards of effective range. It is fairly accurate at 100 yards, but looses most of it's energy at anything beyond that.

I have an A2 upper in 7.62x39 (Colt I'm told) and have shot it a limited amount. Function is fine, accuracy is good with proper handloads, and terminal performance seems superior to 5.56 at short range(under 150 yards). Magazines are much more expensive, GOOD ammo will cost more, and max range is limited. I tried several types of European manufacture ammo and none were worth the effort to shoot in my opinion. One hundred yard rested groups in the 3-4" range are not worth investing on an AR. I achieved groups in the 1 1/2" range using brass cases and Remington .310 125 grain SP bullets. This is about the best I could expect with open sights so I feel the combo is good. Terminal performance was tested using wet newspaper which is not compareable to flesh but gives a good comparison between bullets.

I'll second the above regarding the 7.62X39. I've started liking mine better than 5.56 for fun shooting. Get good magazines though, there's alot of crappy X39 mags out there. The CProduct versions works great - last time at the range I put 4 or 5 full 30 rounders through, no problem. Pain in the butt to load up though, can't get the Lula loader to work with that round.

I'd say stay away from the "Frankenmag" made from an AR top and AK lower as well as the "these 6.8 mags work with X39." They don't.

A good brake helps a bit too, I bought a DNTC that's threaded the standard AR type 1/2 X 28.
