U.S.N. Hand Projector No MK4
I think it is a single shot flare gun. Does anyone know anything about these? Are they worth anything? Legal or ilegal? A buddy found one while tearing down an old house.

If it's a pencil flare launcher, it's legal and so are the flares. The kit I was issued was the Mk 79. Launcher with 7 red flares. 0 -
It has a spent flare in it. The head is stamped "RF" No. 10. Funny thing is it is the same size as a 10 gauge shotgun shell as I put a 10 gauge shell in it and it fit perfect! 0 -
DO NOT TRY 10 gage shells; i know of a man that shot his with shot guns shells; there was very little of the frame left; it was not designed for that much power 0 -
You could get a 10ga to 12ga adapter and shoot the modern 12ga FLARE SHELLS ONLY in it. 0 -

I was thinking that if I were to shoot the flares through it I would need to get the adaptor and use the 12 gauge flares.
No plans on ever shooting this thing, I just needed to know what it was and if it was worth anything. I thought a treasure may have been found! Just my luck, no treasure!0 -
10 ga. "VERY" pistols (flare projectors) were commonly used in WW1 & WW2. Check the top of the barrel and both sides of the frame, there should be a "contractor's" name on the piece. What type of barrel locking system does it have - shotgun type catch or over the top stirrup? Some of these, with proper markings, will sell for over $200 to as much as $400 if in excellent condition. 0 -
I THINK they are not considered NFA weapons.
I also THINK that if you put an adapter in it that it WOULD be considered an NFA weapon.0 -
There is a contract number on it:
CONTRACT No. NORD-8135 EV. Co.
It doesn't look like a gun. It is a tube that twists with three little pegs that when the barrel is rotated locks it up. You then pull a pin at the other end and let it snap back.
