Remington 721 270

I have a model 721 Remington in 270. It has a Leupold 4 power pioneer scope. This is the old type scope with adjustments in the mount. Any ideas on what I should ask for this? I have other 270's that I like better.Thanks for the answers.

    Need to add that the gun has a Bell and Carlson synthenic stock and blueing is overall very good.

    The rifle alone should have a decent value. I use them for low end builder rifles. Not fancy, just good hunting rifles.

    I checked the Auction side and found a few M721's listed in a range of approximately $300 to $500. You can check them more closely for better details. Use the term 'Remington 721' without abbreviations.

    I have no idea about the scope value but some of the other members can help with that.

    In decent shape the action alone should go for $250-$300. Ready to shoot for deer season this should go for $300-$400 depending on condition.

    Go to "Search" and type in 721. You'll get some off brand things in there that have a 7-2-1 in sequence, but for the most part it comes up Remington 721's.

    IMO they are as good an action to build off of as the 700. In regards to that (I feel I'm somewhat hi-jacking the thread {but your answer might contribute}) nononsense, why do you use them for low end builds as opposed to high end? (serious, no sarcasm intended)

    It's perception.

    There seems to be at least two immutable concepts about building rifles:

    - Older, less expensive actions make terrific personal builds. You can dress them up as much as you like and enjoy them forever.

    - Older, less expensive actions are looked down upon by folks who are paying top dollar for an expert custom built rifle valued at several thousand dollars.

    This is usually the situation. A client doesn't want a mid-1950's Remington action for a custom built rifle because they don't think that they are getting a fair exchange in value. It's perception and it doesn't matter if the rifle shoots in the teens all day, every day day. They will believe that they got a cheap rifle and that the gunsmith made out like a bandit.

    There are exceptions of course. I wish I could get a handful of inexpensive Brevex actions or a few Farquharsens...

    As I wrote above, they make great hunting rifles for the general public. On the other hand, I've used them on personal builds for long range target rifles and custom tactical competition rifles with the addition of detachable bottom metal and magazines. I don't have to justify the lack of expense to myself because I'm saving myself some money without compromising quality.

    The M721 is a hard sell but the Model 78 Sportsman is a near impossibility.
