FN 5.7 X 28mm cartridge

Has anyone experimented with the 5.7 X 28mm FN proprietary cartridge? It seems that it would be a likely candidate for wildcatting and necking down to .17 or .20.

It seems that there may be a niche between the 17 HMR and 22 WMR on the low end, and the Fireball, .222, and .223 on the upper end.

    seriously though i think it has been done, i dont have time to look it up right now but in the cartridges of the world book i believe they have some newer additions that people are making out of it.

    My thinking is that it could be an excellent varmint or predator cartridge, for ranges out to 200 or so yards in a walking varminter. I would expect that the velocity of the parent cartridge would approach that of the .22 Hornet.

    I believe you could get 2700+FPS out of it with the right bullet useing the base round.. i have a friend who has gotten neary 2700FPS useing 7.62x25 from a rifle he built useing sabbots and 45 grain bullets.

    Leave the load alone, create scaled down bolt gun or single shots for it... something about the size/weight of a Savage 93FV or similar... Or perhaps something like a Cricket size rifle :)

    I agree it is a great cartridge to wildcat...and its been done. I necked it down to 5MM and put it on a Remington 580 rifle converted to centerfire. It will shoot a 32 grain bullet at 2900fps to 2950fps. It is a great little 200 yard round...very accurate in my rifle shoots 1/2 inch 5 shots at 100 yards.

    Your results are pretty close to the .22 Hornet with the lighter bullets. I recall that with the 35 grain V-Max the Hornet can be loaded up to around 3000 fps.

    Do you see any particular advantages or disadvantages of the 5.7 necked down versus the Hornet?

    The Rem 580 started out as a 22LR so the action isn't really big. The 5.7x28 is a shorter case, so fits the 580 action much better and it is rimless so it feeds easier than the Hornet's rimmed case. I had the Remington 580 and started looking for a little case for it. The Hornet was the first thing I looked at, but settled on the 5.7x28 case. Reloading dies are custom but that is part of the fun of it!
