Bolt still won't open
Thanx for all your help last time. Now that I have the rifle sitting in my lap next to the computer (which is never a good thing) I can explain it a little better. It is a Winchester Model 70XTR Featherweight. There has been a total of five rounds put thru it and that was after the scope was mounted. The bolt will move just slightly up, but no further. As one of you stated before the safety is in the fire position. The strange thing is, the safety won't move at all. I tried going on to youtube to see about dissasembly but they had nothing. Again thanx for all of your help

Scope base screws are too long and are binding the bolt. 0 -
You can't engge the safety with the striker in the fired position. Is there some chance that a fired case was left in the chamber? Take the scope off and remove the bases. Loosen the front action screw at least one full turn or take the action out of the stock would be better. Probably the back hole of the front scope base lines up with the bolt lug cut so put some penetrating oil in that hole if it does. If the bolt will move at all work it what little you can and see if it loosens up. If your knowledge of this rifle is this limited you really should find someone who can remedy the situation w/o butchering the rifle. Don't go back to the other guy you tried. If he gave it back w/o a fix I wouldn't take anything there, ever. 0 -

First things first, verify the gun is not loaded!
Insert a cleaning rod (without brush or patch) in the muzzle till it touches something. Mark the rod even with the tip of the barrel & remove. Hold the rod along the right side next to the barrel with the mark near the muzzle. The end of the rod should reach approx. the middle of the front reciever ring. If the rod end is about 3" short, there is a round in the chamber.

Edit, There is a pin in the bolt/safety that locks the bolt. It is cam activated to move forward (lock) & spring loaded to unlock. Best probable cause is this pin is gummed up or stuck from forcing & bending. Gun was probably stored cocked with safety full on. In trying to release the bolt after storage it is probably now uncocked with safety off but the locking pin in the forward position.0 -
I'm with DUCKHUNTER, it is probably the scope base bolts that are too long. I know because my Winchester 70 did the same thing when I added a Unertl mount to it. 0 -
I doubt the scope base long screw explanation. 5 rounds have been fires after the scope was installed. I suppose screws might loosen and work their way OUT, but NOT IN.[:D]
Sounds to me like something either broke or some foreign bit of stuff found its way into the wrong place.
Removing the trigger might make a difference???

Gently tap the bolt handle up with a wooden mallet, one of your cases was oversize and is bound up inside the chamber. 0 -
After firing the 5 rounds (if that's so) then/than cleaning the gun, your father might have decided to use a spent cartridge as a snap cap to let the firing pin spring pressure off then/than stored it in that manner. A corrosion could have set up on the brass case that expanded and bound the bolt. The only other thing could be that the last cartridge he fired could have ruptured and he just told you he cleaned the gun and then/than stored it bound up with the ruptured case in it. You might lift the bolt knob as far as it will go then/than find a long aluminum or brass rod (or steel) as close to the caliber as you can. Insert it from the muzzle and tap on it as you try to cam the bolt up. Bad practice to tap on bolt handles. 0 -
If you could borrow one of the flexible snake cameras like they sell at Home Depot, you could look down the barrel to see what you really have down there and possible the condition of the bolt if there is no cartridge. 0 -
Did you or somebody use Loctite on the scope mount screws?!
Might have worked its way down to the bolt.0 -
I agree with cussedemagain do the rod thing to make sure its not a loaded round. i have several xtr's and almost all had very tight safetys when new. try moving the bolt up and down a bit as much as possible while trying to move the safety to the middle position. its hard to think a bolt wont cam it open? mo buck is right also have to recock the bolt to move the safety. the main then is mack sure a loaded round ins't chambered!!!!!! if sure of that then a few taps on the bolt handle should break it free. a few squirts of kroil are pb down the barrel may help alot. never have seen a 70 you couldn't open somehow .Good luck and keep us informed may find a new tip is this.
