cleaning color case hardening

I just bought a savage 24v, with a color case-hardened receiver. though the color is there, it seems dull. Is there a way to clean up the surface of the metal, so the colors are more pronounced? Once I get it cleaned up, I'd like to put a coat of clear laquer or some kind of finish to make it pop. Any ideas? Suggestions?????????

  This is a surface finish and thing you do will take more of the color OFF. Even the sun will fade the colors. Clear Lacquer maybe ok.

  And it's a VERY THIN surface finish! Try using a regular non-abrasive paste wax. Neutral paste shoe polish works well.
