Problem WASR 10

So I have this WASR that I bought for my dad. It jams every time it is fired. The bolt will come back about 1/4" then it locks up, and the cocking handle has to be hit with a piece of wood to eject the spent round. Comparing his WASR to mine, I suspect that the problem may lay in a 'lug' that is inside the reciever on the eject side looking down. it is the lug that is most forward, and might be part of the trunnion. Im pretty sure someone else must have had this problem, and Im hoping somebody has a solution.

The Top WASR is the one that jams.

Here is the jammer. Note the forward lug. it is shorter than mine, and I suspect this may have something to do with the jamming problem.

Ive tried polishing the chamber, repeated soaks in Hoppes, etc. to get this thing working. Is that part of the trunnion? If it is, can I replace it with any AK trunnion to fix it?

    Looks like a broken locking lug to me. I have never seen one do that, was the rifle bought new? Is it possible some dummy ground it down thinking they were making it full auto or something?

    Yes it is part of the front trunnion. Yes it it a replaceable part, you will need an oversize barrel pin to set your headspace.

    Yeah I got it used. It actually looks like the factory cut it off when opening the mag well. Speaking of headspace, with a dummy round chambered, and no magazine, I can wiggle the bolt with my finger. Any ideas on someone that can work on this? Noone here in Houston wants to touch it.

    You would probably be best to sell it as is, and disclose the known issue.

    If you have to pay to have it fixed, you could easily spend more on it than it is worth. Your ideal buyer would be someone who wants to fix it themselves, and has the skills and tools to do so.

    Using a live round for a headspace gauge doesn't tell you much, and isn't especially safe.

    I know. Thats why I used a dummy round.

    There's a gunshop in Beaumont, which is about an hour east on ih-10 from houston you could try. I know they do some serious custom work on soviet saiga's, like moving gas blocks back and shortening gas pistons. I figure if they can do that maybe they can help you. At least it wouldn't hurt to explain your problem and ask. The place is called 10-32 supply, here is there phone number (409) 832-4475.
