22 target rifle

My son just made the first team rifle shooting squad at his middle school! [:D] He has been shooting a Savage mark II-GY youth model that we got him for Christmas several years ago, and can obviously shoot it well. But he wants a "target" rifle now that he thinks he is in the "big time."

Considering the fact that the gun has to fit a 13 year old, or be adjustable to fit, and considering that price is a MAJOR obstacle here, what would be the best dedicated target rifle out there, and what is a good peep site for it?

    Bolt, semi, what?

    Aftermarket barrels w/ match chambers are available for the Ruger */22 rifles

    You can also have someone rework the barrel on 'em. Check the Ultamites and Super Stocks out on {elsewhere}

    The winners use Anschutz but there are some others in production.

    Second hand, the East German Suhl 150 has a good following, lots of old Winchester 52s, Remington 40X, etc, etc, target rifles out there with real match chambers.

    The "Ruger" 10/22 factory chamber is the "Sporting" chamber above.
    The "Bentz" chamber is the 'match' chamber for semi-autos.
    The "Match" chamber is for bolt actions.
    The "Win M52-D" is a bolt action target rifle.

    For what shooting discipline?

    1710 or 64MPR HB for Silhouette
    1413-1813 for three position
    1907 for prone

    There are two Anschutz actions. The creme' de la creme' is the match 54. it has extremely fast lock time and the best trigger in the world. The 64 action is ALMOST as good but costs a LOT less money.

    While they make a benchrest model for over $2000, the best .22 BR50 shooter in our club uses an Anschutz Multi-Purpose on the little 64 action in the 10.5 lb Custom class.

    Bridgebuilder- this is going top make a lot of folks here scream "Heresy!", but unless you are into SERIOUS, heavy duty small bore competition, rather than drop a couple of grand on an Anschutz (and they ARE great rifles) why not first spend about $200, and find a nice older Mossberg target rifle? The 44US and the 144 series will shoot better than most shooters- and for a LOT less money. You have your choice of using peeps, or adding a scope. Check thru the auctions here, and see what is for sale. I have about a dozen of the older Mossys, and every one of them shoots better than I do at 50 yds. With Match ammo, and a little luck, they will make one ragged hole with 7 bullets at 50 yds.

    The Mossberg 44US from CMP was a heck of a deal at $89 but when they raised the price to $200, they lost me right there. Not everybody agreed, they are now sold out.
    They are also sold out of the H&R M12s which were an economical heavy target rifle.
    They still have some Kimber 82Gs NIB. I was shooting mine today and it is quite accurate. $600 is less than any current target rifle.

    For casual shooting if the OP does not get all caught up in the "match chamber" mystique or has a budget, the standard .22 bolt actions from Savage, Marlin, and CZ will do very well.
