Colt Ace Magazine help.

I have a friend that has a Colt Ace 1911. This is not a conversion it was bought as a whole pistol. I see magazine auctions labeled as "Colt Ace Conversion mags" and others as just "Colt Ace magazines"? Are they the same or do I need a straight (pun not intended) Ace magazine? I am trying to help his wife get him one for Christmas. Thank you.

    Hello The Colt ace Magazine is NOT the same as the conversion unit if you drop me an email from my profile with your DIRECT email address I will send pictures of what to look for to tell the difference . "PRAISE THE HARD BALL GUN"

    There is no such thing as a "Colt Ace 1911." A "1911" is a military designation for a World War I era .45 caliber service pistol. That designation was never applied to any commercial Colt pistol, nor was 1911A1, a World War II era military model designation.

    You must also be careful not to confuse a true "Colt Ace" with a "Colt Service Model Ace." The two are not the same. The Colt Ace was introduced in 1931, whereas the Colt Service Model Ace was introduced in 1935, but full production did not start until 1937. The Colt Conversion Unit was introduced in 1938. The Ace and Service Ace did not survive World War II, but the Service Ace was reintroduced in 1978 and was made until 1982. The Conversion Unit was made until about 1998 in many variations.

    The Ace is a pure blow-back pistol with a shorter, lightened slide, whereas the Service Model and Conversion Unit use the Williams Floating Chamber to operate a full-size and weight slide. The magazines for the Service Model and Conversion Unit are the same pattern, whereas the Ace magazine is of a different pattern. I presume perry shooter will send you pictures of an Ace magazine and a Service Model/Conversion Unit magazine so you can identify the difference.

    Any Pre-War Colt Ace or Service Ace magazine is a valuable item, with the Ace magazine being the rarer and much more valuable.
