Im cleaning out family stuff and came across a Remington Sportsman 58 that was my grandfathers. I know nothing about guns (though I did shot target practice at camp haha)and am interested in valuing it: here is the info I have: total length is 4 ft; "20.GA for 2 3/4 or shorter shells" on barrell; seriel # 98030X; engraved pictures on hunting and initials "REP" on the side; dark wood handle. Thanks!

I think you do have that figured correct. The best way to narrow it down is to call Remington and let them tell you the age and when it was produced.

If the # on the barrel and receiver are the same, there is a 2 or 3 letter date code on the barrel on the left near the receiver. Check the code with the "Sticky" at the top of this forum and you will have the month and year it was made.

The serial number on mine is 26xxxV and the date code translates to 4/63. Incidently, I can find no serial # on the barrel. Also, I paid 2 and a 1/4 for mine 2 years ago so I'd say you got a good deal.

Thanks for the help. Got it tracked down to March 1956, No Serial, but must be original barrel as it cant get much older
