spring field armory 1911 A1

I am considering buying a springfield 1911-A1. Can someone explane to me the history of springfields use of brazilian parts. Are the parts made in brazil and assembled in the U.S.? I also see some models with serial # NM_ _ _ _ . these do not have brazilian stamping on the frame. are these new or old models? Any and all help would be appreciated. Billy-Bob.

    I bought a new NM prefix Springfield 1911 in the late 80's. As you noted it's not marked "Brazil". I always believed that it was manufactured in the U.S., because of this. As far as I know these "NM" prefix 1911's were only sold by Springfield for a limited amount of time in the 80's.

    The Springfield N.M.marked frames were Just a Play on words. This is the story on National Match pistols .IN 1933 Colt started building Match Grade 1911A1 commercial pistols The slide was marked NATIONAL MATCH the pistols had serial numbers just like any other Commercial With the letter C as part of the serial number.After WW II in 1957 Colt started building pistols with the serial number xx-NM and the marking on the slide changed but was still marked National Match in 1970 the slide marking were changed to MARK IV SERIES 70 GOLD CUP. Now lets look at the MILITARY National Match pistols during the 1950's the military marksmanship units took RACK GUNS some built on military SPRINGFIELD WW II frames and started building Match grade pistols by tighting the slide to frame fit welding up the barrel HOOD & LOCKING LUG putting on Better Sights and triggers with overtravel stop screw. Then the military put out BIDS for Match Grade parts with Drawing numbers on these parts an the parts SLIDES SIGHTS BARRELS BARREL BUSHING were all marked with the 2 letters NM. NOW here comes Springfield a Governmental Manufacture of military small arms for over 100 years . The Government closes them down and sells the name only [V][:(!][:(] but no equipment or skilled workers. This NEW company has the name and they start making the first of MANY brands of CLONE 1911A1 type pistols all frames are made in Brazil but guns are put together here HOWEVER they are NOT Match Grade N M is NEW MODEL but is it not nice that this can be shortened to NM [:I][:o)][V] This is NOT a national match pistol . Later Springfield starts building all different models including so Target grade pistols compact pistols on & on the N. M. on Springfield built pistols.     The usual legend is that NM identifies those Springfields with enough "domestic content" so as to not have to be marked "Made in Brazil." The major parts still come from Brazil, the difference is how much of the work was done in the US.

    Springfield has the frames and slides forged in Brazil. Then they are hand fitted and put together here.
