What is the difference between the P226 and the 229 ? Thanks for any help

    Why doesn't anyone make a 22RF conversion for the SIG 220/226pistols? The conversions are made for virtually every other quality centerfire autoloader but not the SIG. I would much rather that SIG had brought out a RF conversion than the Mosquito, even if it cost as much.

    Without getting too technical, the SIG p226 was originally designed as a full sized service pistol in 9mm luger.

    The p229 is the same basic platform, but in an overall smaller gun intended for undercover/concealment and designed from its inception for use with .40SW (which is a more powerful cartridge). The P229 is manufactured a little differently.

    If you need to know EXACT specs in terms of size, weight, capacity and so forth, you can compare them on the SIG website (they will vary a little bit in terms of which exact sub-models you are comparing).

    The P229 is shorter in the slide and barrel, and in the grip. Magazine capacity, at least in .40 caliber, is the same, 12 rounds.

    The P229 has a slightly wider slide profile too, so it doesn't fit well in a holster that fits the P226 snugly.

    My PD has both in inventory, and offers officers a choice. I chose the P229 because it handled better for me on the range. It also seems to fit my hand better.

    The 229 was SIG's first .40 pistol and was specifically designed to handle this much hotter round by incorporating a heavier slide and slighly beefed up frame. It was more than simply a rechambered and resprung 9mm model.

    SIG designed a heavier one piece stainless steel slide for the 229, where the 226's used a two piece carbon steel slide. SIG has since gone to these one piece, stainless steel items on all their P-series pistols regardless of caliber.

    The 229's grip frame is shorter, but in .40 it's magazine capacity is the same as the 226. The 229's slide is shorter than the 226, but is also a bit wider. Due to the increase in width these pistol's weight is only about 1.6 oz. less than the 226 despite being 1/2 in. shorter.

    You'd expect the 226 to be the better shooter due to it's longer sight plane, more weight out front to mitigate muzzle rise, more grip frame, etc. I haven't found the 229 to be any less accurate and that shorter/wider slide causes it to balance quite a bit differently in the hand. I've fired both models side by side using a timer and have found that the 229 actually gives me quicker recovery times.

    FYI, there is no gun or gun company called Sig; however there was a company called SIG, and their guns are called SIG for short. SIG is an acronym for an old gun company, and stands for Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft. Later it was renamed SIGARMS, and today that same gun company is now known as SIG SAUER.

    Now onto your question. The 229 represents another change in SIG engineering generations. The 226 represents a second generation engineering change in their modern handguns, and the 229 is a third generation modern handgun. IMHO, from an ergonomic design perspective, the 229 is a better gun than the 226. I really don't like their 4th generation handguns. I call them the 4 digit guns.

    There was Swiss company known by the acronym SIG and a German company named Sauer. Sauer partnered with SIG and manufactured their designs, which were marketed for many years under the SIG-Sauer name.

    They later started up a US branch known as SIGARMS. The name SIG-Sauer became available to them in this country only a few years ago and they re-christened their US operation with the original company name.

    From what I recall, the P220 was the single-stack .45 ACP DA semi-auto, (Both European heel mag release as well as American style) The P225 was a compact single stack 9mm, also with either mag release. The P226 was the full sized 15 round 9mm "service pistol", which I have only seen with American mag release, while the SIG-Sauer P228 is the smaller "brother" of the P226, almost like a P225-size slide mated with a 13 round 9mm frame. The P229 is, as has been described in the posts, a new design altogether.
