Herbert Schmidt .22 revolver

I inherited a Herbert Schmidt .22 pistol with the .22 LR cylinder. I recently bought a .22 Mag cylinder. Is this gun safe to use with the magnum rounds? (or for that matter, any rounds.) Thanks

    WELL, YES AND NO. THESE WERE CHEAPLY MADE AND WEAR OUT IF FIRED WITH MANY MAGNUMS. I'VE SEEN SEVERAL WITH BARRELS THAT CAME LOOSE.

    I've fired thousands of 22 LR through mine and a few boxes of 22 Mag. The sear no longer engages crisply but I've never noticed any other wear.

    The obvious question is: Is the barrel bored for .22mag? I think the majority of the Herbert Schmidt guns were made for .22LR. In which case the bore is undersized for the .22mag. Which IMO would make firing .22mag UNSAFE. Especially in a cheap gun!
    I've owned several Herbert Schmidt .22lr SA sixguns. Altho they are not top quality, I have found them to be serviceable and fun pistols, provided they received proper care and cleaning. But I wouldn't advise attempting to modify one to fire .22 Mag unless it was designed/built as a convertible.
