winchester 100 ?

need expert opinions on the win 100 in 308.are they reliable? etc.thanks

    I think they are better design then the Remington line of semi auto's they did have a recall on firing pins and that is no problem to see if yours has new part installed . The gas block may need cleaning after all these years. Over all very good rifle.

    I had the Model 100 Carbine (19 inch barrel I recall) in .284 Winchester, in about 1966 or so. It was very reliable. I do not remember that it ever failed in any way, jammed, or otherwise malfunctioned. I recall that it was not exceedingly accurate. I recall that 100 yard groups around 2 inches or 2.5 inches were customary, but part of that was probably me.

    This rifle accounted for a number of muledeer and whitetails.

    Gas system MUST be cleaned periodically, otherwise action will lock, and you cannot draw bolt back. Getting action out of stock is dependent on drawing back bolt, so this IS a big deal.

    Have read criticisms of the Mdl 100 ref: accuracy- one well respected smith attributes that to bad barrel harmonics, caused by a cut in the top of the barrel for rear sight, and cut in bottom for gas cylinder block.

    But I have a .308 Mdl 100 I deer hunt with, and for a light sporter rifles, it will hold minute of whitetail to a couple of hundred meters. You WILL want a recoil pad- stock design and a very light rifle make shooting one from the bench painful.

    I believe that accuracy problems of both the Model-100 (semi-auto) and Model-88 (lever action) are related to the barrel material that Winchester used. I own both the 100 and the 88, both in .308 Win, and neither one is a terrific shooter. I have a Ruger Model-77 in bolt action in .300 Win mag that will absolutely outshoot the Win 100 and 88. I have never heard nor read about anyone bragging on the accuracy of the 100 and/or 88.
