ar larg pin
I have a chance to buy a really nice colt hbar but the dealer said its hard to up grade because it has large pins. What is he talking about? I am very knew to the whole ar thing.

Early on Colt made the receivers that used a large front hinge pin. There are adaptor pins that allow the mating of uppers and lowers that have different size front receiver pins.
The guy may have also been talking about trigger and hammer pins. They come in two sizes, but most AR type rifles all use standardized size pins.0 -

No, parts are readily available from a lot of suppliers. Just because the gun might have the large front receiver pin does not mean it cannot be upgraded.
You can still get handguards with picatinny (sp) rails for adding a scope, light, forward pistol grips etc. They simply replace the original handguards but have mounting points for accessories.0 -
I know what the owner said, but just to be safe....
Go back to the gunshop, and ask to see a 'non Colt' AR. Compare the two little pins that are just above the trigger to the Colt AR. The larger Colt pins are discernable to the naked eye. If you can't see any difference, the Colt you are looking to buy has the small pins. If you determine that the Colt has large pins, parts are available for it at www.fulton-armory.com
Now, If you wish to upgrade the hammer/trigger to the target varieties, best you have a small pinned rifle to use as a baseline for upgrading, as there's many aftermarket suppliers for the smaller pins. If the pins are the same on both rifles, you're good to go.
I have a 1974 Colt AR, and it has small pins. Do the comparison yourself to be sure. Best, Joe

Post above pertains to the hammer and trigger pins only. They are the only items that would affect the ability to upgrade with aftermarket hammer/trigger, etc. Below is a pic of the pins in question (hammer pin not yet installed). Best again, Joe

Dealer is wrong. He is either talking about the front hinge pin or the FCG pins or both.
In either case,Many parts and uppers available to upgrade.

In the case of a large pin upper being used on a small pin lower the solution is a simple as spending a few bucks on the needed adaptor:

I use this set up on my dedicate AR-15 target rifle and it locks up solid and has never been any concern beyond the front pin looking a little funny. Parts using the larger pin sizes (which were intended to prevent the use of M16 fire control parts) are easily available from a variety of sources.

got it it also came with the scope riser ffor the flat top and two mags,and a flip up rear sight. I feel like I won the lottery 0 -
