7mm and rate of twist.
I'm looking at getting a new rifle as my 11 year old is rip-roaring to go hunting and is taking over my 25wssm, works good as it is a bit smaller rifle.
This will be a hunting rifle, scratches, not a case queen. I like the Savage American classic and a Weatherby in 7mm-08. One question I have, the Weatherby has a 1-10 twist the Savage is 1-11.5, even though the 7mm Rem mag has a 1-9.5 from Savage. Will the 1-11.5 be enough to stabilize the 150-162 class of hunting bullets at 7mm-08 velocities. This will become a do everything rifle for me except long days in prairie dog towns, that's the 204's job.

I think you'd be wise to stick with 10 in or less in the 7mm.
The longer twist will handle the 139 -140 gr bullets but gets a little "iffy" with the longer pills.0 -

The 1-11.5 will stabilize hunting bullets with shorter ogives, but will not normally stabilize target bullets in 162 (i.e A-max). I have a 7x57 with a 1-12 twist and it doesn't stabilize long 160's (accubonds), but stabilizes 16o Speer Mag-tip. There's a lot of difference in length there.
Personally, I would go with a 1-9" twist as it will stabilize up to the long 180's pushed out at reasonable speeds. The 7mm-08 can do that. I'm talking 180 Begers with total length of 1.512". It wouldn't hurt if you have yet to buy a barrel and want to go with a 1-8" or 1-8.5" in case you want to launch them a little slower.0 -
I did talk to Savage today, they are definitely 1-11.5 on the twist. I'm a little torn right at the moment. The Savage Classic DBM, with that great trigger and ,from the few I've seen, great accuracy. Or go with a Weatherby Sage Country(last years model) that has the twist I want and would be my 1st non-wood stock(yea, kinda like the look).
One more question, if the Savage won't stabilize 154SST or the like, how much are we talking for a barrel switch. I'd like to be able to shoot anything in the 48 with this.0 -

The 1-11.5" will stabilize the 154 SST. My 1-12" will do that. MidwayUSA has 7mm-08 barrels for Savage and various other makes. I don't think you'll go wrong with the Weatherby Vanguard. But if it were me I'd prefer the Savage.0
