MOSSBERG 88
I just got a Mossberg (maverick) 88 12 gauge with the 20 " barrel and it reads chambered for 2 3/4 " or 3 " shells.
I only have a few shells around and want to try the shotgun out.
My question is this , the 12 gauge shells I have measure only 2 1/4 inch long which explains why I was able to fit 7 in the gun an 8 with one in the chamber. The shells loaded fine and it ejects them fine but not sure if I should try firing it with the shorter shells or not ???

all factory shells actually measure a 1/4 inch shorter than what it says on the box. in other words a 3 inch magnum is 2&3/4 inches long and ect. so shoot away with shells you got. 0 -
the chamber lenght is that of a fired shell, after the crimp open sup and adds to the length. 0 -
Shorter is always OK, assuming they are loaded to proper pressures.
In fact, Aguila makes some "mini" loads, just under 2 inches. However, due to the lift ramp for feeding into the chamber it may not work with the minis.0 -
Thanks guys for all the info, I am going to check the model # and see why i'm able to get 8 shells counting one in chamber instead of the 6 everone says it should hold. Just wanted to be sure safety wise before I fired a shot off. thanks 0 -

The 20" "Security" Maverick is SUPPOSED to hold 8 2-3/4" shells.
