Remington 700 6mm

Hello, I am trying to get some info on the above subject. It is a heavy barreled rifle with a wood stock. The serial number is 319xxx. The barrel code is hard to read but it looks to be 4 rp 19. The rifle is in excellent shape. Does anyone know what year this rifle was made? What is it's value?

    just purchased a remington 700 in 6mm rem. i would rate it at 95%..it has a 20" barrel and a metal butt plate...also a very nice looking checkered stock..serial # is in the five digit range..markings on left side of barrel are f4 k 41 right side of barrel has what almost looks like a heart..can't figure this gun out in my blue book...would like to know when it was made and approx. value..thanks to all....tom

    Welcome to the forums. Are you sure it's a 700, and not a 721, or 722? I had a 721 in 6mm with a bull barrel, it was a tack driver.

    i once had a Rem. 700 in 6mm Magnum, it was one of the first to hit the market and the barrel was marked "Remington 6mm Magnum", sometime after that marking they dropped the "Magnum" name and all rifles made after the change were simply marked "Remington 6mm". i bought that rifle at the "Navy Exchange" in USNAS Atsugi Japan, November 1962, in fact, i bought 5 guns the same time, a Ruger Deerstalker .44 Magnum, Rem. 700 in 7mm Rem. Mag. , a Ruger .44 Mag. Blackhawk revolver, i do not recall the 5th gun.., oooooh don't ask what i paid for them because i do not want to cry all over my keyboard, i will give you a hint, the Ruger .44 Mag. rifle was less than $50.00 !!!!

    i forgot to mention, the 6mm Rem. is a new name for the old .244 Rem. exact same cartridge, the major change was the rifling twist, it was changed from 1/12 to 1/9

    If the date code is, in fact, RP then the date is 11/67. Check on the auction side to see what similiar rifles are going for.

    According to Remington Society of America: http://www.remingtonsociety.com/rsa/questions/barrelcodes/?na=2 There is no code of RP. However there is a RR and PP but they are '45 and '46. Definitely not your model 700. The Model 700 was when the "6mm" was introduced. And yes, at first it had the 'magnum' in it. That was dropped very quickly. However, Remington changed the twist in the .244 in '58/'59 to 1-9 so that you could stabilize a 100 gr. bullet. Which probably unknowingly was a stroke of genius. Because it will stabilize long pointed spitzers in the 105 gr. range. The 1-10 of the .243 won't. Of course the marketing guru's at Remington never capitalized on that.

    If it's a worn in 700 that would about fit the dates of '67 or '68. With the wood stock it doesn't seem likely it would be '95 or '97. Winchester and Remington as well as some others went with a heavy barrel varmint concept and it was successful starting in the late sixties. But the marketing gurus decided it wouldn't sell on a big scale so they kept it limited. Anyhow, Nov,'67-('68?) is my guess when your rifle was built. They also show exactly where the barrel codes are and how to read them, but I think you have that figured out already.

    Yeah.... That's why I said 11/67 too. However, the way Grousehawker gave the code is not the way the code is written on the barrel. So I thought my reply might be a little more 'in-depth' so as not to say it doesn't exist. But, rather if it did/does exist in the Remington form then that would be the date of manufacture. Also, with a little research, both personal and internet, I found that was about the time Remington started producing varmint specific heavy barreled rifles.

    Also, I didn't see your post as I was working on my post...and then had to edit it.

    I'm going to take a possibly "not-plausibe" approach to this. Knowing the barrel codes from the standard 'off-the-shelf' rifles this should be 11-67. However, the R and P are together followed what appears to be a 73, preceded by a 4. A very bold 4 if I may say so. This may have been a custom barreling in April of '73?
