variable hi power scope on a budget

I'm looking for a scope with a variable power up to around 24x on a budget of less than $400. I want a decent quality that will last and a clear lens. I will be mounting it on a remington 700 chambered in .223 so recoil won't be too brutal and using for target shooting not past 200 yds. I want the high power so I can see better, not to reach longer distances. My question to all of you is: Does this scope exist and if so, who makes it/where can I find it? Thanks in advance (again) for all of your help

    Midway has a Burris 6 to 18 on sale for $299.00. The Weaver V series is fine and in that price range, you can also grab one of their fixed 36X or 24X for $399.00.

    I have a SWIFT 6-18 on a 220 Swift varmint rifle and for an inexpensive scope (under $200) I have been very satisfied. It also has a lifetime warranty that any SWIFT dealer will honor, no shipping the scope back to the factory. I have three SWIFT scopes and all have been trouble free. At 200 yards, 18x is really all the power you may need. If you want more power I'd go with a higher priced scope, something in the $750-$1,000 range. When you get up into high magnification, the best quality lens makes a big difference.

    The Bushnell Elite 4200 6X24X40 AO may be found for a bit more than the $400 if you shop around. I have been using the 4X16X40 AO in this line on my 17 HMR and have been quite happy with it.

    You may wish to consider some of the used mid-priced scopes as well, that can be found on this site, and in many gunstores and pawnshops.

    My Simmons White Tail Classic is 6.5-20x and very nice - adjustable focus for waay close and all the way out, hitting clays at 224 yards (the berm distance) with my 22wmr is easy with it.

    One of the long-distance shooters on this forum (benchrest) has been known to say that he is replacing his Leupold's with Burris Signature Select scopes.
    If I recall, he (the benchrest shooter) was touting the excellent light-gathering capability of the Burris when other scopes would not pass muster during times of reduced daylight. The scops discussed here are equipped with the 'Electro-Dot'. Your call, but that's good enough for me!

    SWFA Sample list has a Burris 8-32x44 Signature Select for $460 also others listed from other makers suggested for good prices.

    I might suggest a Sightron. I just put an SII 6.5-20x42 Mil-Dot, on a rifle and am impressed. I got about 350.00 into it new. FWIW, it sits on a 17 Fireball. Burris is a good name also.

    thanks for all the help guys. i did a little research on all of your suggestions and i can't thank you enough for helping me narrow down the selection.
