    Depends. Are you speaking of the military M1918 BAR, or the civilian hunting rifle?

    The m1918 was a light machinegun, and was the lighest machinegun made in cal 30-06.

    The civilian hunting rifles are semi auto, made in several different grades, originally in Belgium by FN, later in Japan. Very good accurate hunting rifles, a bit pricy, but reliable and accurate.

    They were very accurate but had some serious shortcomings for military use. The main problem was the corrosive ammo in use during WW1, WW2 and Korea because they were gas operated.
    Corrosion froze up the gas port selector, making adjustments for wear impossible.
    The slow rate of fire mechanism rusted, converting it to semiautomatic
    in the slow fire mode as Company armorers weren't authorized the tools to service it. I didn't find one BAR in the 7th Division that functioned in the slow fire mode.
    The barrel was fixed and not quick change so the gun had to go back to Division Ordnance to change it.
    Firepower was limited due to 20 rd capacity magazines as opposed to belt fed guns. Being under the gun a larger mag would prevent firing from the prone position.
    A safety tidbit: the BAR will fire with the hammer removed.
    As it fires from an open bolt and the firing pin is heavy, it will slam fire if the trigger is pulled.
