    The ogives are not the same shape and the comparator and the seating plug are not the same diameter.
    Adjust the die to give the jump you want.

    I do not believe that is logical. The tool (the comparator) is going to measure the same Ogive, no matter what shape the bullet is. That is the purpose of the tool. Dies are designed to seat off the ogive...not the tip of the bullets. It should not matter if the ogive of the comparator and the dies are off slightly...the comparator will still measure everything the same (by it's own diameter).

    Just for the sake of clarity, let's cover a couple of terms being batted around in these dialogues:

    Ogive = for our uses, this is the curved surface of the bullet from the shank diameter (groove diameter) to the tip of the bullet. Ogives are described by the type of curve (Secant and Tangent) and the degree of the curve based on a ratio of form, often assigned simple numbers such 2 through 12. See example below:

    Simplistically, the bigger the Ogive number, the longer and more severe the curve.

    Comparator = a ground bushing of a specific diameter which is slightly undersized from the shank diameter or groove diameter (caliber) of the bullet. This measures the diameter of a bullet as close to the junction of the shank and ogive as possible.

    Solid or mono-metallic bullets are necessarily longer as compared to the standard cup and lead core bullets due to the use of lighter material used to make those bullets. The bullet has to be longer to achieve the same weight as the standard cup and lead core bullets. See example below:

    I tried to size the two images to be the same diameter (width) so that the difference in height was correct or as close as I can get it this late at night. [:D]

    Now, if we look at the that intersection of the ogive and the shank diameter, we get this:

    Note the difference in length...

    Then note the difference in the shape of the Ogive...

    This is the best I can do without some sleep and a fresh look tomorrow. Mull this over and let's try it again in the morning.

    Nonsense has quite good pics for this these bullets have about the same ogive so its hard to see the difference. Take his #2 ogive and his #12 ogive bullet pics. The comparator measures at the front of the cylinder of the bullet at the start of the ogive(curve to tip) this is true of any bullet no matter what the ogive is. On the #2 ogive bullet the tip is alot closer to the ogive line on the #12 ogive bullet, thus the OAL from base to tip will be different. However by seating off the ogive line in theory you are supose to be able to easily seat different ogive bullets the same distance off the lands by using the comparator. Hope this makes a little more sense I'm sure nonsense will finish it.

    That makes sense...and that was my line of thinking...I think I now understand the difference...and it has to do with the the dies seating off of a different diameter than the comparator is measuring from. Thanks again!
