winchester 1892

I received a model 1892 in 38wcf from a friend who passed away recently. Very smooth lever action, octagon barrel, full magazine, solid frame, metal crescent butt plate, lots of scratching on the wood, the finish on the receiver is good, the rifle could use some good cleaning overall, manufactured in 1897. Any idea what this is worth?

    i am building a winchester 1892 and have an antique receiver. how can i tell the calibur of this receiver? i had a spare 25-30 1892 round barrel and it fits on the receiver. please educate me a little so i know what parts to buy to finish this project. thanks

    The Models 1886 and 1892 were two of John Browning's best actions. With their double locking lugs at the rear of the bolt, they were very strong actions for their time. Yours was made in 1912. The 1892, or '92 as it's usually called, came in two basic styles - rifle and carbine. To simplify, carbines generally had 20" barrels and had a steel band around the fore-arm wood. Rifles generally had 24" barrels and had a steel cap at the front of the fore-arm wood. There's a LOT of reference material out there regarding these firearms and there are many, many variations, but if you can get a copy of Madis' "The Winchester Book" you'll learn a lot. Also, the "stickies" at the top of the forum give a lot of good info, but it's more 1894 related. Enjoy your wonderful gift from your grandfather.

    Thanks for the replies. It does have the 24 inch barrel with the solid metal at the front of the stock. I could not get the link from Spider7115 to work though. I will muddle my way thru some of the info on here and learn how to search, I know that will help a lot.
