Hensoldt-Wetzlar Ziel Dialyt 5x 4400 scope

I'm trying to get some background/history on this scope.

It's in good shape and has a leather/cloth carrying case and leather lens caps. Everything appears to be of the same vintage. I have pictures if anyone cares. I'd insert here if I knew how!

The reticle is cross hair/post with elevation adjustment. From other posts, I presume windage is set through the mount, which I don't have.

Can someone help me fill in the voids and tell me what this is and where it came from? Perhaps, what it was intended to be used for?

    Although imported into the USA well before WWII by Stoeger, I believe that all of the Dialyt models date from the 1950s. As you guessed, these scope were designed around a specific side mount (also sold by Stoeger) for windage adjustments. These are top quality scopes, but sadly it is far easier to find the scope than it is to find the mount to fit it! Even so, in the condition you describe I'd guess it would be worth $250-$300...Or a lot more to someone who actually has the mount but not the scope. These were never cheap and the pre war costs for a Hensoldt with the mount was well above $1000 in today's money. In the 1950s, with the US Dollar having amazing strength overseas, these scopes suddenly became much more popular due to what would now be considered bargain prices compared to their pre war cost.

    Yes, I'm extremely impressed with the simple lines and clarity of the lens. Since I don't have a mount, if someone wanted it, I'm willing to listen.

    Put it up on auction here on Gun Broker. I'm sure that a collector would buy it.

    Photos for use on the auction side can be downloaded directly from your hard drive. It is also possible to link them over from various hosting sites, but I am not a computer expert and I can't provide details.
