Smith & Wesson model 10-5 question

I have been offered a Smith & Wesson model 10-5, 4" bbl, round butt, blued. Slight holster wear only. Comes with 2 holsters.
I am curious of when this might have been made and ballpark value. Asking price is $200.
Sounds like a decent deal to me, just looking for a second opinion.......

    $200 sounds like a good deal. According to my Smith Book your serial number was made in late 1975. Are you sure it has 6 digits in the serial number and not 5?

    A problem with the info you provided. The model 10-5 was only made in 1962 and the beginning of the "D" prefix was in 1967.

    I'll double check, but unless my pencil failed me, the S/N is D8311xx

    I called the gentleman offering the pistol and he verified that it is marked 10-5 on the frame (under the cylinder yoke) and the S/N is D8311xx.

    The 10-5 was introduced in 1962. This change consisted of changing the front sight width on the tapered barrel models. The D serial# prefix was introduced in 1967.
    D8311xx would fall into the range of 1975-1976, D750001-D870000.
    I believe with the Model 10's it was common to have several dash#'s such as 10-5,10-6 and so running together at same time. This is due to the different configurations such as barrel length,heavy barrel,tapered barrel,round or square butt grips.

    $200 for one of these with round butt in good shape is a pretty good deal, especially with holsters (if they are nice holsters).

    Its not an absolutely "screaming" deal given that worn 4" square butts can still be had for $200 (or less), but I don't think you can go wrong with *ANY* Smith revolver in good shape for $200, particularly not a classic one like a model 10.
