S&W model 14

There is a S&W model 14 on gunbroker that is listed as rare because it is single action only.Did S&W actually manfacture a model like this? And is it rare? Or was this changed to S.A. only? I have seen a part number for a S&W single action hammer. JUST CURIOUS.I'm sort of interested.

    I have a chance to buy a S&W Model 14, DOM late 60's(?). Regular hammer and trigger, 6" bbl. Serial# K-2090xx. Is this a K-38 Masterpiece? Is this what is known as a 5 screw? Thanks

    Yes, S&W did make a single action only model. I have seen a couple. When the trigger is pulled the cylinder turns, but the hammer does not move.

    They are not "rare" but are not real common either. Smith made the K-38 Masterpiece Single Action for 21 years, 1961-82.

    One the flip side, years ago when LAPD used the model 14 as an issue gun, they had their armorers modify the guns to "double action only". They did not want their officers to be able to cock the hammers back as this practice was blamed for some un-intentional shootings.

    While the S&W M14 did come from the factory as single-action only, a standard single/double action model can be easily converted to appear as such. The single-action only guns command a small premium in price over the standard version, but before I would pay any premium I would want a factory letter to authenticate it.

    I would expect a NIB SAO gun to sell for a substantial premium, but, of course, the original box label would have to match the gun.

    If I remember correctly, the S&W 14 Single Action had the wide target hammer and wide target trigger with an over-travel trigger stop. Also, had the large grips. It was a nice target gun. If you are looking to shoot wadcutters for paper punching targets it would be perfect. I like the older Smiths.

    S&W also made a 'conversion kit' to go from d.a. to s.a.

    The SA Smith Model 14 hammer is different than the regular 14 hammer in that it of course does not carry the DA sear but is also not machined to accept them.
