lady's carry gun?

I'm looking into getting my girlfriend a carry gun and have decided on a wheel gun for it simplicity as she has little experience. I've narrowed it down to the CharterArms 'Lavender Lady' or S&W AirWeight 637. I want her to have the option of single action for accuracy if she has her wits about her, or double action if all she can remember to do is pull the trigger. Of the two, which would you recommend and why?

    If money is not an issue then I take the Smith over the Charter Arms every single day of the week. Charter Arms are good guns and good quality, but they lack the fit, finish and attention to detail that you'll find in an S&W J-Frame. In handguns like this it is the little details that make all of the difference because accuracy simply does not enter into the equation in the kinds of self defence situations that a pistol like this is going to be involved in. The J-Frame is also going to be able to offer your wife a much wider selection of stocks in all shapes, sizes and materials than would be available with the Charter Arms.

    Welcome to the forum. I would go with the S&W...but probably in SS.

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker. I would go with the S&W every day of the week too. I would look at a Model 60 pro, and stay away from the airweight. The 60 will handle 357 magnums or 38 specials, is a little heavier, but not as stout in the recoil department, if your lady friend is an amatuer shooter.

    Be sure that she has the hand strength to fire any gun before you buy it.

    For me, the deciding factor would be the fact that you can buy a Wolff spring kit for the S&W revolver, but not the Charter.

    I and my wife both carry the S&W 642. In a defensive she can just point and shoot.

    Smith vs. Charter?

    No brainer. . .get the Smith.

    For someone who isn't accustomed to shooting a lot, I would check out a Smith 60, by the way. The extra weight of the all steel gun significantly reduces recoil.

    If you don't like the hammer, you can always have it bobbed later.

    Edit: I can see the appeal of pink guns to ladies. FWIW, Smith does offer pink grips now:

    Also, with the modern coats like Duracoat, it possible to have ANY gun finished in pink, if you are so inclined.

    My wife likes her "Pink Lady" more than any of my Smiths.
    Probably because it is pink.[:(]
    But at least it makes shooting more apealing and fun for her, and it goes bang every time.

    I carry both a hammerless Centennial and M-36 models from S&W.

    The 36's hammer hangs on to clothing, therefore, I'd advise the Centennial for carry instead

    ALWAYS the Smith over the Charter Arms!!!! That being said; I would also consider the Taurus lightweight dbl action only. It is IMO far better than the Charter, and cost about half as much as the Smith.

    Get a Smith hammer or hammerless light weight revolver and not a steel gun if you expect her to carry it. 38 +P should be plenty.
