I am looking for information on the Waltham Arms Company. I have a very old single shot 12 gauge shotgun marked as such with a patent date of either 1856 or 1866. Any inquiry leads me to the Waltham Watch Company, Waltham Mass., although I did see a vague reference to the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. It is possible it is not even from the U.S. Can anyone help?

Most likely made in Liege, Belgium, by Anciens Etablissment Pieper and sold by A. Baldwin & Co, New Orleans, about 1893-1914.

    Not safe for modern loads.

Full name should read A. Baldwin & Co Ltd. Pat May 12 1902. "Trade Brand Name" shotgun made, not in Belgium but in Norwich,CT by Hopkins & Allen for as stated Baldwin & Co. Ltd. of New Orleans,LA. Gun was made sometime between 1903 when it was patented and 1915 when Hopkins & Allen was sold to the Marlin Rockwell Corporation.

Old does not make it valuable, demand does and there is scant demand for these old utilitarian shotguns. Most of the demand that is there is generated by purchases by decorators, the guns to be used as wall hangers, and by a few nostalgic shooters with having one for the wall in mind. They generally bring between $50 and $150 depending upon condition, the exceptional example bringing a little more.
