Any suggestions for a cheap scope for this would be appreciated.

    Well, you can always visit Wally World for a fairly cheap scope. The 550s and 550-1s are capable of very good accuracy for a hunting quality rifle- they are NOT bull barreled benchrest rifles, but not bad shooters. You can pick up a cheapy Tasco 3-9x40 with mounts (for a dovetail- not all 550-1s have the dovetail slot) for about $50 for Walmart. Just put one on a Remington 552. No, it is not a Leupold. But you DID say cheap scope. Or go look around the auctions- sometimes a no reserve auction may surprise you.

    NO, That old 550 deserves a decent glass. My Ruger has a 1" 3-9 steel Weaver on her.[:D]. If I do my part, the 'ol girl never lets me down. Grey squirrels[:p][:p][:p]. You get what you pay for. Works for me. [;)]Eddie

    Lyman B4's and B'6's are floating around cheap, period correct and look right on the gun.

    Possible alternative if your 550 isn't grooved and you don't want to put extra holes in it,
    I drove out (and saved) the front and rear sights on mine, put a williams shorty ramp on the front and a guide style aperature sight in the rear.
    Not a scope, but extends the "squirrel range" for me from about 25 to 50 yards.
    p.s. If it is grooved, consider a Weaver base (not sure of the number) that slides onto the groove and permits use of standard 1" Weaver style rings.

    i have a "Bushnell .22 Varmint" on my Remington 550-1, it's performance is exceptional, i have removed many, many vermin/varmints with this combination, i will not brag about "long shots" as there is none, most of my kills with this rifle and scope have been 15 to 50 yards. the one thing about the Rem. 550-1 is that it will reliably cycle .22 CBs, i took out a feral cat about 25 yards, one shot to the head, it dropped like a ten ton rock and never made a move, not even a flinch after it fell.

    BTW, do not look for a "cheap" scope, look for an "inexpensive" scope which the "Bushnell .22 Varmint" is, and a very good scope.

    Thanks everyone. I ended up with a Lyman 4X all weather challenger scope from 1952. Pristine condition. I figured period correct was the way to go after reading this. I'll have to admit, the old boy looks bad ass with a scope. Will shoot it next week. Thanks for all your help. It's only the second scope I've ever owned.

    The Lyman Challenger has a 26mm tube. Sounds like you may have already mounted it so you must have the correct rings. If you are buying rings for it you must get the 26mm size.

    Rings came with it. I realize it's a smaller diameter than new ones but all I shoot is paper and I like the sleek look.
