restriction on Puma Model 92 "Bounty Hunter"
Hi, I have been looking for this type of firearm for a long time, but I never knew they name. After finally finding out that Puma makes this I go to galleryofguns.com, and do a search. Only to see a message saying that there might be some restriction in my area and I might not be able to purchase this firearm.
I live in California. Can any one tell me or might have an idea why I could not purchase this firearm. (for specs, etc. here is a link.)

it is considered a pistola due to length and not on the CDOJ list 0 -
Generally the Cal DOJ approved list is for double action revolvers and semi-auto pistols. Almost all single actions need not be on the list and can be sold in calif. A lever action "pistol" would likely have to be on the list to be sold here.
If you could find one already here, it could be sold as a private party transfer but you and the seller would have to meet at an FFL to complete the paperwork.0 -

It is a shame that you are having this problem.
I tried to duplicate your results, using Davidson's Gun Genie. The warning "We're sorry, there are certain restrictions in your area that may prevent you from purchasing this item.
" shows up only after the Gun Genie knows your ZIP code & click on "INSTANT QUOTE". Using a ZIP code of 90001 (a Los Angeles, California code) reveals the warning. Using my Southern Louisiana ZIP code, I do not get any warnings.

Why isn't this thing (a stocked handgun) considered an AOW?
And if it isn't an AOW ("any other weapon"), couldn't you legally chop it down even shorter?0 -

Not considered an AOW since it was made as a pistol, and it doesn't have a shoulder stock or *vertical* foregrip. And yes, you could chop it down further.

It is very cool.
It would be an SBR, not an AOW since it has a rifled bore if it were an NFA item. Pretty much the only "traditional" firearm pistol shaped gun that is an AOW would be one with a VFG on it. If it started life a virgin receiver (as all guns do) and was built into a pistol (as apparently this is) then it IS a pistol. If it has ever had a stock, becoming a rifle, on it then it was cutdown (or taken off) it would become a SBR (Short Barreled Rifle). This is no different then doing it with an AR-15 which has become so popular or with say the Ruger Charger vs 10/22.
The ONLY way I am aware that this could be a pistol is that Puma builds the receiver and NEVER put a stock on. They then build it with a short (pistol) barrel and got the ATF's ok that the rear grip is a grip and not a stock. One key part to being a pistol it that is is "is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand".
They are very cool and at $500 I bet I would buy one in .44 mag just because. The website lists them at $1250 and while cool they are not even that close to cool for me.0 -

I find all of this ATF "regulation" to be a farce.[:(!][V][:(!][V]
...so, if you get a chance to see one of these in person, then you can find "Pistol" clearly marked in two places on the gun:
(1.) The barrel says "Pistol Only"
(2.) On the receiver upper tang

I am not sure what your point is here.
The ATF is VERY real and until it (the law) is changed it is the LAW. If you choose to follow the law great, if not then you do so at your own risk. Ignorance of law is not a defense that will stand up in court. I agree that the ATF sucks and ALL gun laws are an infringement on our 2A rights if that was your point but I can not do anything to change them if I am locked in jail for breaking current laws.
No one claimed it was not a pistol, Bean asked a VERY good question about how this gun was not an NFA item.
I could stamp everyone of my rifles with pistol but legally that does not make them a pistol. On the other hand when was the last time you saw a "traditional" pistol like a 1911 or a Glock with "PISTOL stamped on the side? The word "PISTOL" does not in any way change what a gun is legally.
This gun IS a pistol because of the way it was manufactured and no other reason.0
