first cleaning

picking up a new nickel plated semi auto with black plastic grips on fri. what should i use to clean the factory oils off before i take it to the range ?

    Hmmm, odd that you feel the need to tell us the color of the grips, but you didn't tell us the make or model of the gun.

    Whatever, "oils" are never a problem. It's possible to have metal shavings inside a new gun, especially if made in a 3rd world country. I would take it apart, clean it with the same solvent I use whenever I shoot, then oil lightly & reassemble.

    Clean it exactly the same as you would clean the same gun after you've brought it back from the range after shooting it.

    What should you use?

    Personally I like "Breakfree CLP" as my general purpose gun cleaning goo, but there are many other products that will do a great job too (eg Remington gun oil, Hoppes, etc, etc).

    Also, being new, it wouldn't hurt to remove the firing pin and be sure there's no spooge & debris in there to hang it up.
