HELP! Winchester model 1887 12 gauge

I would like to find out any info on this gun my wife bought me. The serial number is 5566. I would also like to see if I could find out the value mainly for insurance reasons.

  No disrespect intended but in light of your zero description as to condition, original finish, originality, markings, etc., nobody could even give you an educated guess. It's like asking "What's a 1962 Chevy worth?".

  You can get the original factory ledger information for it from the Cody Firearms Musuem (use the web link following my signture line). The serial indicates that it is a first year (1887) production gun.
  
  As Spider mentioned, it is not possible to provide you with a reasonably accurate assessmnet of the value without a detailed description, or better yet, pictures of it.
