STUCK BOLT??

Hello...I have a 9.3x62 mauser and the bolt sticks about half way when i try to lift the bolt handle after i fire it. The loads i'm using are on the low end of the loads in my book. The bolt workd fine empty but when fired you have to really yank to get the bolt up. Any help will be appreciated.

    Check the chamber for rust or a ring bulge.
    The chamber needs to be bright and dry of oil.
    Don't use any loads lighter than published in the loading manual.

    Make sure your gun is unloaded!

    Check your gun again to be doubly sure there is no round in the chamber or magazine.

    Close the bolt while holding the trigger back.

    The bolt now should be closed, uncocked, & the chamber empty.

    If you experience the "sticky" spot when reopening the empty gun, the problem is probably with the fit/smoothness of the bolt sleeve & cocking piece.

    Thanks Jim....I did it and it opens fine not stickt at all. Only happens when I fire the gun.

    Dave,

    I would advise a trip to the gunsmith for a hands-on evaluation. Sounds like you may have either a chamber problem as v35 suggested, or the lugs on the bolt may be gauling. Either one will require a 'smith's help.

    I have noticed the shoulder of my brass is more crisp of a angle the the new brass. The new brass has more of a rounded shoulder and after i fire it has a sharper angle.

    Also the bolt doesn't stick as bad on some shots as others. May it be brass issue? I bought that Graf brass

    You have a dirty CHAMBER remember the chamber is larger then the bore normal cleaning does NOT clean the chamber. This rifle is more then likely 50+ years old and NEVER had the chamber cleaned. Take a shotgun mop that will just be a snug fit in the chamber dont try to stick it in the barrel wet the mop with kroil let set for 24 hours and if it comes out dirty then use some JB bore cleaner on the mop and then CLEAN the chamber. This rifle is most likely 50+ years old and NEVER HAD THE CHAMBER CLEANED

    Check chamber carefully, to include headspacing. You may have a re-barreled military receiver, and the work is only as good as the fitment. If you are going to rely on a gunsmith to diagnose, bring a fired case with you, also. Best, Joe

    You fired some factory ammo as a control, am I correct? I'd eliminate that as the problem before I went one step further. Best again, Joe
