300WM and 7 Rem Mag

What will one do that the other wont? I just dont understand what all the fus is about between these two?

    Actually they will both do about the same thing...one(300WinMag) delivers just a touch more energy, and has more recoil...the other7mm RemMag) has slightly less energy, and less recoil...it also has a slight edge in trajectory at extended ranges,

    The 300WM has similar ballistics as the 7mm Rem Mag, but with a larger bullet.

    There are more and heavier bullet choices with a .30 cal vs a 7mm.

    For what it is worth, I traded my Remington 700BDL in 7mm mag for a Weatherby MkV in 300 Weatherby and have never regretted it.

    The 7mm RM catches up to the 300RM in energy due to the higher BC of the 7mm ammo. Usually at around 200 yards.

    I'm a 3oowm fan but the only advantage over the 7mm is the heavier 30 cal bullets that are available for it...but I don't see the 220 gr pills offered as a factory loading anymore so the advantage may only apply to those with the patience to hand load.

    My father shoots a 165gr 7mm RM at elk and I prefer a 180 gr 300 WM. I've seen elk go down with both and they all eat the same.

    Different calibers are not made for the game, but for the shooter. Just as differnet fishing lures are not made for the fish, but the fisheman....![8D]

    Actually, it's the high BC bullet that is better at long range and the high weight bullet at shorter ranges.

    Typically, both 7mm and .30 cal have decent BC bullets in the hunting departments. When you compare equal weight bullets of approximately equal shape, the 7mm is going to be a higher BC. It will therefore have a better trajectory at long range. The range that BC starts to show a difference is about 300 yds.

    Now, when you get into the target realm it takes a lot more weight in a .30 cal to come up to the same BC as a 7mm. Some of the best bullets I've shot are the Berger and the JLK 180 gr. VLD/ULD type bullets. Sierra claims their .30 cal 240 SMK is a .711 BC. I've never used it to find out. I have shot their 210 and their 220. They don't have the BC that the Berger and JLK do.

    So, for hunting, either will work. You get more energy with the .30 cal usually because bullets are heavier, and you get a flatter trajectory with 7mm.

    And, FWIW, the .300 WBY mag does not necessarily beat the 7mm. It beats the 7mm farther out than the .300 WM does, but unless you have enough twist in the barrel to stabilize the 240's then it's not going to totally beat the 7mm Rem Mag.
