    "J.C. Higgins"........was a sears 'brand'. made by almost all u.s. gun makes at one time or another. the shotgun you are looking for was probably made by savage, at leaste thats the only 'side release lever' shotgun that comes to mind.

    locust fork has one now on auction it is an h&r not sure if they made any for sears though, it has lever you push down just right of the trigger.

    That looks to be the same type as a Steven's Model 94 or a Savage Model 220L-D hammerless single shot (I have the latter in 20 gauge).

    I have a sears 101.40 in 410 I have been trying to restore,Its a side lever have it all together but the butt stock which is different than all the rest.also have a 20ga same gun but butt stock different its a stevens 940L.My old blue book lists 2 cross ref. for the 101.40.1 a springfield and one a stevens.forend is snap on for 410 and 20 ga is screw.tks hedge[:D]

    Thanks guys for the info. I have been tearng up the internet looking for pics for all these guns and can't seem to find any. Know of any sites or books with pics?

    Numrich has schematics of a lot of old rifle and shotguns and also have a cross reference chart you can use to ID you shotgun. Use the chart to find the model of your Sears shotgun, go over to the parts for sale section and most have a picture schematic of the weapon.

    This gun is not like the one I am looking for. The release is mounted on the side. The gun I am looking for is very much like the H&R Topper, but again, that is not the one either. I wish I had the model number from my old .410, but I lost the gun several years ago in my younger(read stupid) years in a pawn.[V]
